Last Requests Of WWI Soldiers Revealed, Available Online.

 

The last wishes of thousands of soldiers killed in World War One and unseen for a century are being made available online.

The wills of 230,000 British Empire soldiers written in their own hand have been placed on a new website, allowing families and historians to view them for the first time.

Some 5% of the wills contain a treasure trove of personal letters penned by the soldiers and intended for loved ones back home, but which were never posted.

Instead, those letters have lain alongside the writers' wills in sealed archive boxes for 100 years.

In one of the letters, written on August 10, 1914, Private Joseph Witchburn of 2nd Battalion The Durham Light Infantry tells his mother: "I dare say this will be the last letter you will receive from me until the war is over, as I am prepared to move to the front at any moment."

An anonymous government official recorded on his will that he died of his wounds on September 14, 1914.

Another will belonging to John Fleetwood, the grandfather of rock band Fleetwood Mac's Mick Fleetwood, reveals his death from dysentery in a hospital in Malta on December 30, 1915, after serving in Gallipoli.

That document was discovered by leading British historian Jon Cooksey who was given access to the new database before Thursday's website launch.

He praised the value of the archive and said: "What this does is help us, as historians, piece together the mosaic of facts which give us the real men."

Archivists at specialist record management company Iron Mountain spent five months first indexing and then painstakingly scanning by hand the soldiers' wills so they could be put on to a computer and then online.

The work was undertaken under contract from Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS), which is responsible for the records.

The wills are held in a secure facility run by the company on the outskirts of Birmingham, while the digital copies are stored in a data centre in Milton Keynes.

In total, the facility houses 41 million wills and probate records dating from 1858.

All the hard copies are carefully stored in pH neutral boxes in sealed climate-controlled and fire-proof rooms where the records should survive "in perpetuity" according to Iron Mountain.

John Apthorpe, the firm's commercial director, said: "With 230,000 individuals who died in the war, the emotions (that come through) are quite interesting when you read some of the notes they left.

"A lot have straightforward statements, but some of them do have personal letters and touches, and a bit more detail about what's happening."

Courts Minister Helen Grant said: "This fascinating project has opened the door to a whole new insight on our war heroes - it has given us the opportunity for the first time to hear the thoughts and emotions of the brave soldiers who died for this country in their own words."

The wills, classed as official records, were only previously accessible through direct requests. They were not released to beneficiaries because they belonged to the then War Office and the Government.
The short-form wills presented on small pieces of paper were often handed to soldiers by their company officers and senior non-commissioned officers to be completed before embarkation for a theatre of the war, which raged across the globe from July 1914 until November 1918. :: The archive can be accessed here

Madonna is the world's top-earning celebrity raking in an estimated £80m ($125m) last year, according to the Forbes rich list. The pop star, 55, beat second-placed Steven Spielberg (£65m, $100m) to top spot, after her MDNA tour grossed more than £190m ($300m).

Spielberg, who had a big hit last year with the film "Lincoln", earned most of his income from his catalogue of past hits, such as "E.T." and "Jurassic Park".
At joint third, with earnings of £60m ($95m), were "50 Shades of Grey" author E.L. James, radio shock jock Howard Stern and music and television producer Simon Cowell.
"Madonna's success, at age 55, just goes to show the incredible power of a successful music career," Forbes reporter Dorothy Pomerantz said.

Forbes compiles its annual list of celebrity earnings using input from agents, managers and producers.
The figures do not reflect tax deductions, agent fees or "the other expenses of being a celebrity".
Madonna's top spot compares with her previous peak of £70m ($110m) in 2009.
But it falls short of the £105m ($165m) taken in by Oprah Winfrey in the previous year, Forbes said.

Talk show queen and media mogul Winfrey took a big pay cut this year according to Forbes, falling to 13 on the list with earnings of £50m ($77m).
Lady Gaga ranked 10th in the list, earning £51m ($80m).

Others in the top 10 included TV host Glenn Beck, director Michael Bay of the "Transformers" franchise, and thriller novelist James Patterson.

Patterson is now the best-selling author of all time, Forbes said.
Both Spielberg and Bay also made last year's top 10, though with significantly larger earnings.

Membe, Warrioba Wazungumzia Uraia wa Nchi Mbili

WAZIRI wa Mambo ya Nje na Ushirikiano wa Kimataifa, Bernard Membe amependekeza Diaspora itambulike kikatiba.

Waziri Membe aliyasema hayo alipokutana na Mwenyekiti wa Tume ya Mabadiliko ya Katiba, Jaji Joseph Sinde Warioba, ofisi za Tume hiyo zilizopo mjini Dar es Salaam.

Katika mazungumzo yao, viongozi hao walijadili suala la uraia wa nchi mbili ambalo linapiganiwa kwa kiasi kikubwa na Watanzania waishio nje ya nchi (Diaspora).

“Tumekuja kuwasilisha masuala muhimu mawili; moja, uwepo wa uraia wa nchi mbili katika rasimu ya katiba na pili, katiba mpya iruhusu raia yoyote wa Tanzania aweze kuwa na uraia wa nchi nyingine pasipo kuukana uraia wa Tanzania,” alieleza Waziri Membe.

Alisema wizara yake inatambua suala la uraia wa nchi mbili kuwa ni la msingi, ambalo halikugusiwa katika rasimu ya katiba iliyopo.

“Chimbuko la uraia wa nchi mbili lilitokana na wingi wa Watanzania walioko nje ya nchi ambao wanatafuta fursa ya kuwekeza na kuinua maendeleo ya nchi yao,” alisema Waziri Membe.

Aliongeza pia, “Ilani ya Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ya mwaka 2005 inawatambua Watanzania hao na kutaka wapewe fursa ya kuwa na uraia wa nchi mbili katika kuinua maendeleo ya nchi.”

Alisema Watanzania hao wamekuwa wakikabiliana na matatizo kadhaa ambayo yanawanyima haki za msingi, kama vile afya, elimu na masuala ya ajira. “Kilio chao kimekuwa kero kubwa kwa vile wakati mwingine wanatibiwa kwa gharama kubwa sana ambazo hazilingani na kipato chao,” alisema Waziri Membe.

Aidha, alisema changamoto hizo zimekuwa chanzo kikubwa cha kuwashawishi Watanzania hao kuchukua uraia wa nchi za kigeni ili kuwawezesha kupata huduma muhimu za kijamii kama vile elimu na afya.

“Hivi sasa sheria yetu haimruhusu Mtanzania kuchukua uraia wa nchi mbili pasipo kuukana uraia wa nchi yake,” alisema Membe, na kufafanua kuwa “Ilani ya CCM inamuhamasisha Mtanzania huyo achangie maendeleo ya nchi yake kupitia uraia wa nchi mbili.”

Waziri Membe alisema Watanzania wakiwa nje wanakosa fursa za kazi zenye kipato kikubwa wasipokuwa na uraia wa nchi hiyo, jambo linalopelekea maisha magumu na kushindwa kujikimu na kuchangia kipato chochote kwa ndugu zao walioko nchini.

“Badala yake, unakuta Watanzania wananaswa na tamaa ya ‘kujiripua’ kwa kubadili uraia wa nchi nyingine zinazokubali uraia wa nchi mbili na kuachana na uraia wa Tanzania,” alieleza Waziri Membe.

Kwa upande wake, Warioba alisema maoni hayo ya uraia wa nchi mbili yamekuwa yakijitokeza katika ukusanyaji wa maoni sehemu mbalimbali na kuongeza kuwa, hofu kubwa ya wananchi ni usalama wa nchi yao endapo uraia wa nchi mbili utaruhusiwa.

Waziri Membe alikuwa ameambatana na Balozi Gamaha, Naibu Katibu Mkuu wa Wizara, Balozi Bertha Semu-Somi, Mkurugenzi wa Idara ya Diaspora na James Lugaganya, Mkurugenzi wa Idara ya Sera na Mipango katika Wizara ya Mambo ya Nje na Ushirikiano wa Kimataifa.

Jayceon Terrell Taylor, better known by his stage name Game, formerly The Game, is an American rapper and actor. As a member of G-Unit, he rose to fame in 2005 with the success of his debut album, The Documentary, which earned him two Grammy Award nominations. Followed by two more successful albums his second album Doctor's Advocate in 2006, and his third album LAX in 2008. Game also runs his own record label The Black Wall Street Records. Since then, he is considered to be a driving force in reviving and bringing back the West Coast hip hop scene, which had been overshadowed by artists from the East and South.[3][4][5] Early life

The Game was born Jayceon Terrell Taylor on November 29, 1979 in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in Compton, California in a primarily Crip gang neighborhood known as Santana Blocc,[6] although he grew up to become a member of the Bloods.[7][8] He was born into a life of gang-banging and hustling. In an October 2006 interview with MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway, Game described his family as "dysfunctional" and claimed that his father molested one of his sisters.[9] When later interviewed, Game stated that at a young age, he recalled seeing both of his parents preparing to do drive-bys. His father was a Nutty Block Crip and his mother a Hoover Crippelette. Drugs and guns were all around Taylor while he was growing up. At around the age of 6, Game stated that a friend of his was murdered in the neighborhood by a teenager, for his clothes and shoes.[10]
At the age of 7, Game went into foster care. In foster care he was teased by other children, he didn't go unnoticed however. Game's intelligence was acknowledged by his caretakers and he usually helped his foster brothers and sisters with their homework. Around 1989, Game met his idol, Eric Wright also known as Eazy-E founder of the rap group N.W.A, this being a defining moment in his life. Game's adolescence was one of many hardships, at 13, one of Game's older brothers, Jevon who was just 17 at the time was shot at a gas station. His brother had just received a record deal. Game stated that he felt his father played a hand in this by not being there and felt that if he had, his brother would not have been shot. Jevon died the day after Game visited him in the hospital promising that things would be better and lost time would be made up. Two years later at the age of 15, teenage Jayceon was removed from the foster care system and back into his mother's home. Taylor and his mother, Lynette, had a tumulutous relationship at first and Taylor's father was no longer around.[10]
Game attended Compton High School where most of the students with gang affiliations were Crips. His older half brother George Taylor III, known as Big Fase 100, attended Centennial High School and was the leader of the Cedar Block Piru Bloods. In high school, Game was beginning to follow in his brother's footsteps. However, Game's natural abilities in althletics led him into a spot as point guard on the basketball team. He also ran track and did various other sports. Game graduated from Compton High School in 1999 and had received scholarship offers from various colleges,[11] Game enrolled at Washington State University on a basketball scholarship. In his first semester, however, Taylor was caught with drugs in his possession prompting the university to revoke his scholarship. He was suspended from athletics in his first semester because of drug allegations. However, the university's athletic department refutes these claims.[12]
It was then that Taylor started fully embracing street life and turning towards selling drugs and running with gangs.[13] Game and his brother Big Fase owned an apartment on the outskirts of Compton in Bellflower. Shortly after moving there, they quickly had a monopoly on the drug trade, but the operation was short-lived. In October 1, 2001, while Taylor was in the apartment alone, he heard a knock on the door at 2 a.m. Expecting a late night sale, Taylor opened the door to see a regular customer. The man, however, was accompanied by two other visitors and a fight ensued between Taylor and another man. Before he was able to reach for his pistol, Taylor was shot execution style by one of the assailants five times. After laying still for several minutes, Game used his cell phone and called an ambulance. Due to the severity of his wounds, Taylor went into a three-day coma.[10

Reward $11,000 from Web Users to a Palestinian who Exposed Facebook Flaw

Internet users have raised more than $11,000 to reward a Palestinian security researcher who hacked into Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg's profile to expose a security flaw.

The fundraising campaign on the website GoFundMe raised $11,035 from 178 people in one day for Khalil Shreateh, and was continuing to take donations after he was denied a "Facebook Bounty."

"I hope this has raised awareness of the importance of independent researchers," said Marc Maiffret, a security expert at the firm Beyond Trust who led the effort: "I equally hope it has reminded other researchers that while working with technology companies can sometimes be frustrating, we can never forget the greater goal; to help the Internet community at large."

While Facebook offers rewards for those who find security holes, the company said Shreateh went too far by posting the information on Zuckerberg's own profile page without getting consent.

Shreateh said on his blog he found a way for a Facebook user to circumvent security and modify another's timeline, even if they were not friends on the network.

He said he took the unusual step of hacking into Zuckerberg's profile after being ignored by the Facebook security team.

UGANDA na RWANDA WAJITOA BANDARI ya DAR ES SALAAM

 

Dar es Salaam. Chama cha Wasafirishaji wa Mafuta Tanzania (Tatoa), kimesema Rwanda na Uganda zitajitoa kutumia Bandari ya Dar es Salaam kuanzia Septemba Mosi, mwaka huu.

Katibu Mtendaji wa Tatoa, Zacharia Hanspope aliwaambia waandishi wa habari jana baada ya kukutana na Kamati ya Kudumu ya Bunge ya Bajeti kuwa nchi hizo zinajitoa kutokana na matatizo mbalimbali ambayo kwa muda mrefu zimekuwa zikiyalalamikia lakini Serikali haikuchukua hatua.

Hanspope alisema ushuru wa barabara na ushuru wa forodha ni baadhi ya vikwazo ambavyo vimekuwa vikilalamikiwa kwa muda mrefu na wafanyabiashara mbalimbali wa nchi hizo.

“Serikali ipunguze gharama za ushuru wa barabara na ushuru wa forodha ili kuwa na ushindani sawa na bandari nyingine na hivyo kuzivutia kutumia Bandari ya Dar es Salaam,” alisema Hanspope.

Katibu Mkuu wa Wizara ya Uchukuzi, Omary Chambo alikataa kuzungumzia lolote kuhusu suala hilo akisema halina mantiki yoyote kwake.... “Hivi hilo jambo unaloniuliza lina sense (mantiki) yoyote? Mie siwezi kujibu lolote nenda ukamuulize mwenyewe (Hanspope) maana wakati akisema mimi sikuwepo.”

Alisema kujitoa kwa Rwanda na Uganda kuitumia Bandari ya Dar es Salaam hakutakiathiri chama hicho tu, bali uchumi wa taifa kwa ujumla.

Hayo yanatokea wakati Rwanda ikiendeleza vita yake ya maneno na Tanzania na mfululizo wa matukio ya kuitenga Tanzania kwenye Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki. Viongozi wa Kenya, Rwanda na Uganda walikutana Juni 25, mwaka huu mjini Entebbe, Uganda na kukubaliana kuongeza uhusiano wa kibiashara baina yao.

Kamati ya Bajeti
Mwenyekiti wa Kamati ya Kudumu ya Bunge ya Bajeti, Andrew Chenge alisema katika kikao kijacho cha Bunge, kamati hiyo itaibana Serikali kuhusu mikakati inayofanywa kukabiliana na ushindani wa kibiashara katika Jumuiya ya Afrika Mashariki.

Alisema sababu ya Rwanda na Uganda kujitoa kutumia Bandari ya Dar es Salaam ni vikwazo katika barabara ikiwamo mizani mingi ya kupimia mizigo.

“Mizani ni mingi pia kuna usumbufu katika kupima mizigo yao na kwamba hali hiyo inawaletea usumbufu wafanyabiashara wengi,” alisema.

Alisema vitendo vya askari wa usalama barabarani kudai rushwa pia ni miongoni mwa vikwazo pamoja na urasimu mkubwa katika utoaji wa mizigo bandarini ikilinganishwa na bandari nyingine.

“Ni lazima tujifunze kwa majirani zetu Msumbiji, upanuzi wa haraka wa Bandari ya Beira umekuwa kikwazo kwetu, kampuni nyingi zimeanza kuitumia bandari hiyo,” alisema.

Chenge alikitaka chama hicho kuiandikia kamati hiyo mapendekezo yake ikiwa ni hatua ya kunusuru uchumi wa nchi ili waweze kuijadili bungeni.

Umoja wa nchi tatu
Marais Uhuru Kenyatta wa Kenya, Paul Kagame wa Rwanda na mwenyeji wao Yoweri Museveni walikutana mjini Kampala, Uganda na kuamua kuitumia Bandari ya Mombasa kwa shughuli zao.

Waliahidi kuimarisha ufanisi katika huduma za Bandari ya Mombasa ili kuhakikisha bidhaa zinafika mapema Uganda na Rwanda.

Pia walikubaliana kujenga reli mpya ili kurahisisha usafirishaji wa bidhaa kutoka Mombasa kwenda Kenya na Uganda.
Viongozi hao walikubaliana pia kushirikiana katika sekta ya nishati hasa ikizingatiwa kuwa Uganda imegundua mafuta.
Nchi hizo tatu ambazo zimeruhusu kwa raia wao kusafiri kwa vitambulisho pale wanapotembelea nchi tatu miongoni mwao, zitakutana tena Kenya mwezi huu.

SIKU chache baada ya kupelekwa Mahakama ya Kisutu, jijini Dar kisha Mahakama ya Mkoa Mrogoro kwa helikopta, hali ya kiongozi na Katibu wa Jumuiya na Taasisi za Kiislam, Shehe Ponda Issa Ponda imedaiwa kuwa mbaya.

Shehe Ponda Issa Ponda. Agosti 19, 2013 saa 2:12, Shehe Ponda alifikishwa Mahakama ya Kisutu, Dar akitokea Gereza la Segerea ambapo alifutiwa mashitaka ya kuchochea vurugu nchini kati ya Juni 2 na Agosti 10, mwaka huu kwenye maeneo ya Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam na Morogoro.
Kama hiyo haitoshi, siku hiyohiyo alikimbizwa Morogoro kujibu mashitaka ya uchochezi aliyoyafanya katika mkutano wa hadhara hivi karibuni mjini humo, hali ambayo ilimfanya atoneshe kidonda chake cha risasi aliyodai kupigwa.
Kwa mujibu wa ndugu wa karibu, kutokana na jeraha hilo la risasi alilonalo kiongozi huyo, hekaheka alizozipata siku hiyo zilisababisha atoneshe kidonda na kumfanya ashindwe kusimama wala kulala hadi familia kufikia hatua ya kuomba arudishwe Hospitali ya Muhimbili katika kitengo cha mifupa (Moi) kwa matibabu zaidi.
“Kiukweli hali ni mbaya, wamempeleka harakaharaka tena ghafla, matokeo yake wamemtonesha kidonda. Tunaomba wamrudishe tena Moi (Muhimbili),” alisema mmoja wa ndugu wa familia aliyeomba hifadhi ya jina.
Akiwa Morogoro, alipandishwa kizimbani na kujibu shitaka la kwanza la uchochezi pamoja na mengine mawili anayodaiwa kuyafanya Zanzibar. Agosti 10, mwaka huu kwenye mhadhara uliofanyika Viwanja vya Shule ya Ndege, mjini Morogoro, Ponda alidaiwa kuchochea kwa kusema:
“Ndugu Waislamu msikubali uundwaji wa kamati za ulinzi na usalama za misikiti kwani kamati hizo zimeundwa na Bakwata ambao ni vibaraka wa serikali.”
Shitaka hilo liliunganishwa na mengine mawili anayodaiwa kuyafanya Shehe Ponda maeneo ya Dar na Zanzibar
