Approximately half of the world's population is at risk of malaria. The global malaria eradication campaign of the mid-20th century was successful in eliminating disease in subtropical zones; however, decreased funding and support have led to resurgence. This session of Public Health Grand Rounds reviewed the history of the eradication campaign, current malaria control efforts, and strategies to eliminate this deadly disease.
As part of an ambitious bid to wipe out malaria by 2025, Cambodia has begun training up several thousand villagers to act as foot soldiers in the fight against drug-resistant forms of the disease with a little help from mobile phone technology.
