Tanzania's Maasai Battle Game Hunters for Grazing Land
In a remote corner of northern Tanzania, Boeing 747 planes land on a private airstrip, trucks with United Arab Emirates (UAE) number plates drive across the plains, and anyone with a cell phone receives an unlikely text message:Maasai women have been most vocal in their protest about the wildlife corridor. This sign in Kiswahili at the meeting in Olorien village on 6 April 2013 says: "We will fight for our land until the end." "Dear guest, welcome to UAE."
For centuries, the sprawling savannah in the Arusha region of the East African nation was home to the Maasai people, but these days it can feel more like Dubai, one of the states that make up the UAE.
That is because this chunk of land in Arusha's Loliondo area near the Serengeti National Park has been leased to an Emirati hunting company called the Ortello Business Corporation (OBC).
Since 1992, OBC has flown in wealthy clients to shoot lions and leopards, angering nomadic Maasai cattle herders who are blocked from pastures in the hunting grounds.
Now, Tanzania's government wants to give more land to the hunters by establishing a 1,500 sq km (579 sq mile) wildlife corridor exclusively for OBC.
The plan would displace about 30,000 people and affect tens of thousands more who graze cattle there in the dry season.

The 17-year-old singer’s parents Sean, 47, and Michelle, 49, have also been arrested on suspicion of being part of a ‘major money laundering investigation,’ reports claim.
Two properties owned by the couple in Tetney, near Grimsby, were raided by Humberside police following the obtainment of warrants.
An onlooker told The Mirror: “There were police everywhere with cars and flashing blue lights. "It was obviously a big raid. They had springer spaniel sniffer dogs out around the house as well.”
A Humberside police spokeswoman has said: “Officers executed warrants at two addresses in Tetney with the assistance of Lincolnshire Police this morning.
“A 49-year-old woman was arrested at the Tetney address and taken to Grimsby police station to be questioned in connection with money laundering offences. “As part of the same inquiry a 47-year-old man has been arrested on behalf of Humberside Police by officers from the Met. He will be questioned by Humberside Police.”

Doctor’s daughter Sarah Houston, 23, had bought DNP - a slimming aid popular with bodybuilders which has been linked to 62 deaths worldwide - and had been taking it along with an anti-depressant.
The combination of the drugs, which both boost the body’s metabolism, may have proved fatal, the inquest was told.

Liverpool have fined Luis Suarez for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic but insist the striker still has a future at the club.
Suarez, 26, bit Ivanovic's arm during his team's 2-2 draw against Chelsea .
Asked if the incident would affect the player's time at the club, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said: "Not at all."It affects his future in the sense that we have to work with him on his discipline."
The Football Association will review the match official's report into the game and incident before deciding what course of action to take.
However, Ayre said he has spoken to the club's owners concerning the controversy and added: "Luis is a very important player to the club."As we keep saying, he signed a new four-year contract last summer and we'd all love to see him here throughout that contract. "He's a fantastic player, top scorer and everything we'd want in a striker, so there's no change there.
"This is more about getting him back on the right track and it's largely down to [Liverpool manager] Brendan [Rodgers] now to work with him on that side of his character."
Merseyside police say they will not take any action against Suarez, with Ivanovic not reporting any physical injury and telling officers he did not want to pursue the matter.
Suarez issued a swift apology following the conclusion of the game at Anfield on Sunday and also spoke to the Serbia international. "I've spoken to Ivanovic on the phone so I could apologise directly to him," Suarez tweeted. "Thanks for accepting." He also tweeted: "For my unacceptable behaviour the club has fined me.
"I have asked the club to donate the money to the Hillsborough Family Support Group for the inconvenience I have created to the Liverpool fans and to Ivanovic." It is not the first time that the Reds forward has committed such an act. While playing for Ajax, he was banned for seven games after biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal during a match in November 2010.
