Twitter Announces Initial Public Offering (IPO)
Social media site Twitter has filed an application with the Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering, or IPO.
True to its business, Twitter tweeted on Thursday, "We've confidentially submitted an S-1 to the SEC for a planned IPO. This Tweet does not constitute an offer of any securities for sale."
The company filed a confidential S-1 filing, as permitted with the Jumpstart Our Business Startups, or JOBS, Act. The S-1 filing, revealing details about Twitter's business such as its user base, will become public no later than 21 days before the firm's road show with potential investors.
The Jobs Act, signed into law in April 2012, permits companies with less than $1 billion in annual revenue to file a confidential S-1.
The media has already started to compare Twitter's potential IPO to that of Facebook, which went public on May 18, 2012.
Rick Summer, internet and technology analyst with Morningstar said, "Market sentiment is obviously pretty favorable towards market-leading social Internet companies, with the recovery in Facebook's stock (which was warranted, in our view) leading the charge."
However, the devil is in the details, said Summer, who expects to learn "a great deal" once the S-1 filing is made public. He is interested in insight into the company's customer base and revenue mix, based on types of advertising.
"Ultimately, we would expect the company's financials to demonstrate these advantages," Summer said. "Still, we would advise investors to be very sensitive to valuation. Clearly, waiting [until] after Facebook's IPO and investing at a more reasonable valuation would have been the preferred way to invest in Facebook."
After early stock performance that disappointed many investors, shares of Facebook closed at $44.75 on Thursday. Facebook's offer price was $38 a share and its valuation was about $100 billion. Early estimates of Twitter's valuation range from $10 to $20 billion.

Wakati Padri huyo akieleza hayo, Rais wa Zanzibar Dk Ali Mohamed Shein, ameijia juu polisi kwa kushindwa kudhibiti matukio ya viongozi wa dini na serikali visiwani humo, kushambuliwa kwa kumwagiwa tindikali huku akilitaka kuwakamata waliohusika na tukio hilo.
Kiongozi huyo wa dini, aliyejeruhiwa maeneo ya usoni, mikononi na kifuani baada ya kumwagiwa tindikali hiyo alisafirishwa jana na ndege ya kukodi ya Shirika la Coastal kutoka visiwani humo hadi Dar es Salaam na baadaye kupelekwa Hospitali ya Taifa Muhimbili (MNH) kwa matibabu zaidi.
Dk Shein alisema Polisi inatakiwa kuongeza nguvu za uchunguzi ili kukabiliana na matukio ya kikatili ya umwagaji wa tindikali, yanayoshamili visiwani humo hivi sasa.
“Hatuwezi kuviacha vitendo hivi viendelee … ni lazima Jeshi la Polisi lijitahidi kuwatafuta wahusika ili sheria ichukue mkondo wake,” alisema Dk Shein.
Dk Sheni alisema, kitendo hicho ni cha kikatili na kisichovumilika na kuongeza kuwa wahusika lazima wasakwe na kuchukuliwa hatua za kisheria.
Kwa upande wake, Padri wa Parokia ya Mtakatifu Joseph, Zanzibar, Thomas Assenga aliyefuatana na kiongozi huyo mpaka MNH, alisema siku za nyuma Padri Mwang’amba alitolewa vitisho na mtu ambaye hamfahamu wakati akienda kutoa huduma katika kituo cha wazee cha Welezo.
Alisema kabla ya kufika kituoni hapo, kuna eneo ambalo nyakati za asubuhi watu hufanya mazoezi barabarani ambapo kuna mtu mmoja alimtolea maneno ya vitisho.
“Unajua kawaida ya watu wa Zanzibar hufanya mazoezi barabarani, sasa kipindi anapita eneo hilo katika kilima, kuna mtu alimwambia atamfanyia kitu kibaya ambacho hatujui ndiyo hiki au la,” alisema Padri Assenga na kuongeza:
Alisema Juni mwaka huu mara baada ya kupewa vitisho hivyo alikwenda kutoa taarifa kwa Sheha wa eneo hilo na kituo cha polisi.
“Mara baada ya kutolewa vitisho hivyo Juni mwaka huu, alichukua jukumu la kwenda kutoa taarifa kwa mkuu wa eneo hilo (Sheha) na kituo cha polisi.”
Akielezea tukio la kumwagiwa tindikali Padri Mwang’amba, alisema alimwagiwa saa 9:45 alasiri juzi wakati akizungumza na simu nje ya internet café iliyopo eneo la Mlandege.

Thadeo Mutembei Boosting Teachers Morale with a Trip to Dubai, Car and Laptop..!
Given the tough environment under which most teachers operate in the country, a private secondary school owner has awarded his 25 teachers a tour to Dubai where they would also engage in a shopping spree.While in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E) each of them would be awarded a car worth Sh16 million plus a laptop. This means that a total of Sh400 would be spent for car purchase only. The teachers who are departing today on an Emirates flight would spend one week in the Gulf. The major objective of taking the teachers to Dubai is to give them an opportunity to widen their experience with their counterparts in the U.A. E.
Thadeo Mutembei, the director of St Mark Secondary School , told the 10th graduation ceremony at the school recently that he decided to take the teachers to Dubai as part of a study tour, something that would boost their working morale.
About 193 Form Four students graduated during the ceremony. “ I want to boost the morale of my teachers so that they can improve the performance in my schools,” the director underlined.
He said he had no plan to give priority in employing teachers from foreign countries since those from Tanzania were also capable of delivering quality service in his schools.
The noted entrepreneur owns four secondary schools located in Dar es Salaam, namely St Mark, St Mathew, St Victory and Ujenzi.
In an ongoing campaign of tracking illegal immigrants, his schools were not spared as government officials stormed in, taking away one teacher for questioning, an incident about which the director apologised at the graduation ceremony.
On her part St Mark’s Headmistress Leticia Joseph said in the past five years the performance of the school had improved tremendously, reaching a pass rate of 97.4 per cent, enabling many students to join A-level studies and technical institutions. The headmistress raised concern on the increase in the number of text books, saying the situation has been confusing students.
Dar es Salaam regional education officer Bernadetha Thomas, who was chief guest at the ceremony, said the government had learnt a lesson following the massive failures of form four students in national examinations last year, promising that such situations would not recur.
The director was yesterday flagging off his employees for their captivating trip to the Gulf, at St Victory Secondary School. At the graduation ceremony, he urged other employers to take up the idea of motivating their employees.
Observers said this might be the first time a local employer moves to motivate employees in that manner. A number of experts have a feeling that teachers, especially those in public schools need to be motivated considering that they face hardships in their conditions of work.

MINISTRY OF ENERGY TO CANCEL MINING LICENCES
The government has put 102 companies on notice that it will withdraw their dormant mining licences, which were awarded between 2006 and 2012.
The licence holders have a month to show why they should not surrender the permits, minister for Energy and Minerals Sospeter Muhongo confirmed yesterday.
“They have up to October 9 to operationalise the dormant licences or the government will repossess and give them out to companies capable of rolling out the mining activities for which they were issued,” he told The Citizen on Saturday.
Sections 36 and 52 of the mining code provide for prospecting work to begin within three months of receiving mining rights. The firms must also stick to mining operations.
Permanent Secretary Eliakim Maswi issued the notice on Monday in a move seen as a clampdown on individuals who get mining licences only to turn around and hawk them to international prospecting firms for profit running into hundreds of millions of shillings.
Many of the speculators are influential politicians, businessmen and well-heeled individuals out to profiteer from the country’s huge mineral deposits. There has been widespread criticism of the manner in which the licences are given out, with claims of corruption.
Yesterday, Mr Muhongo said 98 per cent of the 102 licences are owned by Tanzanians who cannot develop them. Mr Maswi put the figure in Dar es Salaam at 94 and one in Boston in the US. The rest are spread in other areas of the country.
The government is concerned about the loss of revenue through hoarding of the licences, according to the minister.
At Mererani, for example, locals own 597 licences but only 10 pay taxes. Some of them sell to foreigners. Mr Muhongo reiterated that those who fail to implement the government’s order will have their mining blocks revoked.
In recent days, the minister and influential businessman Reginald Mengi have gone head to head over the ministry’s stance on gas, fuel and mining block licences.
Mr Mengi has pushed for a delay in issuing gas exploration licences, arguing that new policies should first be aligned with local participation and ownership in the lucrative industry.
But the minister has advanced the view that licences should be granted to those with the capital and technical know-how to develop the sector within the set deadlines and in keeping with national growth objectives.
