Jay Z Has Dropped The Hyphen From His Name

Jay Z Separation: Jay Z is forcing a separation of the Jay and the Z of his stage name by dropping the famous hyphen; the rapper is pictured attending a party for The 40/40 Club in New York on June 17

The news was taken with some grains of humour among those associated with the music industry.
Joe Levy, editor of Billboard magazine, tweeted: 'Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.'

Levy's followers pointed out the Picasso Baby hitmaker - whose real name is Shawn Carter - tried to alter his moniker a few years ago.

'Didn't take, though. The hyphen is strong,' the Billboard editor said.
Picasso Baby   This time's the charm: The 43-year-old rapper, seen here performing at the Wireless Festival in London on Sunday, tried to drop the hyphen years ago but it didn't stick

Although the singer's Blueprint 3 album in 2009 still carried the name 'Jay-Z,' his collaborative album with Kanye West Watch The Trhone released in August 2011 credited him as 'Jay (no hyphen) Z,' Newsday.com reported.

Not to confuse the matter even more, Jay also goes by the nicknames Jigga, Jay-Hova or simply Hova, according to The National Ledger.

Jay Z, who is famously wed to singer Beyonce and is father to their 18-month-old daughter Blue Ivy, is not the only rapper to change his name recently.

Snoop Dogg reinvented himself as a reggae star last year and adopted the name Snoop Lion, for his Reincarnated album.

Speaking about his name change, Snoop said: 'To me, the Lion is the growth of Snoop Dogg - me growing into the next phase of my musical career, the next phase of my life.'
Legends Of The Summer
Jay Z - who kicked off the Legends Of The Summer Tour in Toronto with Justin Timberlake on Wednesday - had a chance to visit England's Salisbury Cathedral to see the original Magna Carta, which inspired his latest album Magna Carta... Holy Grail.

The hip-hop star spent an hour in the church on Sunday observing one of only four surviving original copies of the 1215 proclamation.
He also got to chat with the Dean Reverend June Osborne, who later described him as 'a delightful guest.'

The artwork for Jay Z's album is being displayed at the 750-year-old cathedral alongside the original 800-year-old parchment copy of the Magna Carta.
