The blast, in an area popular with tourists, has injured up to 40 people as rescue teams search rubble for trapped people.A powerful explosion in the centre of Prague has injured up to 40 people and left several others buried under rubble, police have said.
The blast in a building on Divadelni Street, close to the National Theatre, was heard as far away as Prague Castle, over a mile away across the Vltava river.It blew out the windows on many of the surrounding buildings which were evacuated.
A police spokesman said it was probably caused by natural gas and that there had been about 15 people in the building, which included an office of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and an art gallery.
Pensioner Venceslava Sehnotkova, who lives in a nearby house, told Reuters: "I was sitting quietly in my flat, making coffee. Then there was an incredible explosion. I thought the building would collapse. I looked out the window, and there was only dust everywhere."
"We have treated up to 20 people, and we are trying to find out if there are people buried in the rubble," Prague emergency service spokeswoman Jirina Ernestova told AFP.

She said there were fears three people may be buried in the rubble of the damaged building which police said was a former block of flats now used as office space.
Ms Ernestova said ambulances were staying at the scene "in case someone was pulled out of the rubble".
Zdenek Schwarz, head of the rescue service in Prague, said up to 40 people have been injured but suffered mainly bruises and cuts from glass.

Historic First as Stockholm Imam Calls to Prayer - Fittja Mosque

Worshippers at the Fittja mosque in southern Stockholm on Friday heard Sweden's first-ever call to prayer, which brought some congregation members to tears of joy.
Guluz Kayhan, 45, had tears in her eyes when the notes of Sweden's first-ever call to prayer ended and worshippers hurried up the steps of the mosque.

"I don't go to the mosque as often as before but I wanted to experience this," she told The Local as she wiped tears from her blue eyes. Flanked by her two daughters, Kayhan made her way inside, slipping off her shoes. "I'm really proud of Sweden," said her daughters' friend Havva Göcmenoglu, 24. "I am proud of being part of a society that respects different religions."
Yet as the spring sun broke through the clouds after a bitterly dour morning, two men in a red Volvo 740 crept up to the curb and halted, just to spin their wheels so furiously the rubber shrieked as much as it burned. People making their way into the mosque turned their heads, but most seemed intent on ignoring the odd act. The congregation was a mix of people who moved to Sweden from countries such as Turkey decades ago, but a number of people who immigrated more recently joined in too.
